"FRIENDS OF THE BALTIC" INTERNATIONAL YOUTH ENVIRONMENTAL CAMP - EDUCATION FOR PERSONAL ACTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

In the middle of July the international youth environmental camp, which worked during more than two weeks in Russia and Estonia, was finished. The camp was held by Friends of the Baltic NGO with the support of Nordic Council of Minister.

More than 30 students and teachers from Russia, Finland and Estonia took part in the camp. The main idea of the camp was to apply principles of environmentally friendly lifestyle to the practical actions. These principles were discussed in April in St.Petersburg at the Youth Environmental Parliament, where students from Russia, Finland, Estonia and Sweden had formulated the Code of Environmentally Friendly Behavior.

Camp started in North-East Estonia (Ida-Virumaa region) at the rural guest farm "Orava Talu". Its owner Priit Orav is a long-standing partner of Friends of the Baltic. His farm is a member of Estonian Association of Rural Guest Houses and it is very requested by tourists, which value closeness to nature and environmentally friendly lifestyle. There all possible environmentally friendly technologies are applied in practice: separate waste collection and recycling, energy saving, using natural construction materials.

Camp participants made several useful works for the farm: cleaned the forest, made a wicker fence, restored traditional stone wall, learned how to make various wooden things and furniture without nails. Camp participants met leader of Center for Applied Ecology Sillamae Marina Janssen and discussed, how can we promote environmentally friendly agriculture choosing environmentally friendly products in the market. After that participants went from Estonia to Russia and visited nature and cultural values of Leningrad region and St.Petersburg.

Special part of the camp was addressed to exchange experience of environmental education and local environmentally friendly initiatives in the coastal zone of the Lake Peipus and Gulf of Finland. It was organized within the Moving Environmental Conference (bicycle campaign) in cooperation with Center for Environmental Initiatives (St.Petersburg), Dodo (Finland), Estonian Green Movement and Lake Peipus Project.

Participants had a meetings on environmental education at the schools in Seredka village, Pechory and Jõhvi, in the Information Eco-Centers of Tartu and Sillamae, exchange experience of informal education of children and adults. Friends of the Baltic and Center for Environmental Initiatives hand out to colleagues educational materials, published by them and used for educational programs on the basis of St.Petersburg Public EcoInfoCenter.

Participants have performed action in Izborsk, initiated by NGO "Lake Peipus Project" and local activists: cleaned up and restored unique landscape and historical object. Local activists plan to develop environmentally friendly tourism in this area as a way to save nature and historical values of the Lake Peipus region and minimize negative impact to the environment of the Baltic Sea region.

In Sillamae camp participants took part in the workshop on the "environmentally friendly building technologies", managed by Center for Applied Ecology. International team painted the walls of Sillamae Information Eco-Center with natural casein paints, made from curd (cottage cheese) and lime.

The Friends of the Baltic international camp gave partners new knowledge and contacts, useful experience and real practice of environmental education for personal actions, which should be the basis of environmental friendly lifestyle and sustainable development of the Gulf of Finland region and Baltic region in the whole.
