  • Citizens of Zelenogorsk found out why the marine plastic litter is a big problem


    Members of the public environmental organization "Friends of the Baltic" at the environmental forum "Ant wave-2018" on the North shore of the Gulf of Finland told local residents about environmental consequences of the marine litter, especially plastic. Publications on microplastic and environmentally friendly lifestyle was given to the library of Zelenogorsk town and local inhabitants. The participants of the workshop devoted to the reduction of plastic waste on the individual level and the whole family learned how to determine the plastic marking, recognize about what plastic is suitable for food, how separate waste collection works, and why microplastic is a big problem.

  • "Barefoot on the beach" - environmental event on the Gulf of Finland shore


    An environmental action "Barefoot on the beach" was held on June 13, on the beach of the Gulf of Finland in the village of Bolshaya Izhora. The staff of "The Regional center of culture and youth initiatives", the employees of youth labor brigades, volunteers of the VOLUNTEER-LR movement were both cleaned coastal areas, and learned to carry out monitoring of marine litter by international methodology http://baltfriends.ru/eng_rw_manual under the guidance of the Ecocentrum and Friends of the Baltic experts.

  • Plastic free ocean – cleaning up the coast and monitoring of marine litter on the Kotlin island


    Ecocentrum and Friends of the Baltic together with the employees of the Fertoing and Mordraga companies on June 9 held a clean-up on the beach of the Kronshtadt municipality on the Kotlin island in the Gulf of Finland, and conducted monitoring of marine macro-litter on the coast.

  • Observations of water bodies in the Luzhsky District: The results of public observations and a seminar on the problems of natural water quality in the Luga River basin.


    On the 4 of June, 2018 in the city of Luga, the representatives of the Public Consultative Council of the Luga Basin, heads of local settlements, educational and public organizations, as well as representatives of the media and fishing clubs took part at the Round Table "Quality of Natural Waters in the Luga River Basin: Public Participation in the Identification and solving water problems ". Within were discussed the framework of the event, the main environmental problems in the river basin, and were conducted field trips to study water quality in the water bodies of the Luga region. The organizers of the event were the «Ecocentrum» and «Friends of the Baltic» in the framework of the Barents-Baltic program "Nature and Man".

  • New demonstration dry toilet and a demonstration site for the disposal of manure will be established at the ranch "Golden horseshoe" in the Gatchina district of the Leningrad region

    May 22 experts of Ecocentrum Ltd together with Friends of the Baltic NGO has visited the ranch "Golden horseshoe" in the village Chernovo of Gatchina district and examined the contents of nitrates in nearby springs and wells.

    The place for demonstration of ecological approaches to wastewater and farm waste treatment is chosen specially. The environmental issues and ideas of greening of household are very close to the owner of the ranch Svetlana Volnitckaya. Svetlana and her family conduct different activities - farming, agricultural tourism, keeping of animals rescued from death – they have a zoo with more than 20 species. In addition, Svetlana is engaged in social projects (hippotherapy for children with disabilities), develops social entrepreneurship in the Gatchina district (the first charity shop in the Leningrad region was created by her hands). Svetlana has the aim of development of organic farming. The ranch is also a venue for festivals and meetings with leaders of other social and environmental projects. 100-200 people a day gather on the events.

  • Public research of microplastics in water bodies - training for teachers and exchange of experience

    The training on selection and analysis of microplastic samples taken from natural waters took place in the St. Petersburg on the 7 of May. It was held by the experts of Ecocentrum Ltd, non-governmental organization "Friends of the Baltic" and the Research Limnology Institute of Lymnology of Russian Academy of Science. Educators from schools and universities, public activists and scientists shared their experience of water research and the results of testing methods of marine litter and microplastics investigations.

  • More Baltic, Less Plastic project was presented at the educational regional round table in St.Petersburg

    The round-table "Planning and implementation of measures for environmental education of the population of St. Petersburg" was organized by the Committee for nature use, environmental conservation and ecological safety of St. Petersburg City Government in the center of import substitution and localization of St. Petersburg. The round-table was attended by representatives of public environmental organizations and projects: Friends of the Baltic, ECA, Clean games, Environmental Union and public organizations, which promote separate collection and ecofriendly lifestyle etc., as well as representatives of the business community.

  • Luga River Festival was held in 2018 in the village Tolmachevo in Luga district of Leningrad region

    The Luga River Festival gathered together more than 100 people. It was held on May 19 in the village Tolmachevo in Luga district of Leningrad region. Students and teachers, environmentalists, scientists in different disciplines, organizations, authorities, media and NGOs were the guests of the Festival.

  • At the "Clean Coast" regional action, young people learned about climate change, energy efficiency and microplastics in the seas and oceans

    On May 12, the "Sea-Climate-Energy" and "Microplastic" information stations launched "Friends of the Baltic" as part of the fifth international environmental campaign "Clean Coast".
    The action took place on the Tarhovka beach in the Kurortny district of the city on the northern shore of the Gulf of Finland. It was devoted to improving the ecological state of the coast of the Gulf of Finland, the formation of ecological awareness of the younger generation and the active population of the city, as well as the development of environmental volunteer movement in the field of environmental protection.

  • «Manure tour» – experience exchange among farmers from Russia, Finland and Estonia


    How to use farming waste to develop agriculture and at the same time to avoid pollution of rivers and seas? Ecocentrum Ltd and Friends of the Baltic NGO with support of Coalition Clean Baltic held an educational trip to Estonia and Finland on April 12-16, 2018. The aim of event is experience exchange among farmers from tree countries (Russia, Estonia, Finland) on waste management.

  • The river basin: water, climate and human impact. Training on methods of investigation of water objects.

    Leaders of school ecological groups, schoolchildren, as well as students, active citizens, interested in River watch, were participants of the training. 30 participants from St. Petersburg and Leningrad region, including Luga River basin, visited the training. Experts of the Neva-Ladoga Basin Water Directorate, Institute of Limnology of the Russian Academy of Science, representatives of the library association of Kurortny district of St.Petersburg, public organizations «Separate waste in Gatchina» and «Kolibri v KADRe» took part in the event.

    XIX International Ecological Forum Baltic Sea Day was held in St. Petersburg on March 22-23rd. Results of HELCOM Ministerial meeting, which was held in Brussels on 6 March 2018, was one of the main topic of discussion. Forum was organized by HELCOM, Ministry of natural resources, Government of St.Petersburg and other organizations. This year forum was organized in parallel on two areas – St.Petersburg and Kaliningrad.

  • Eco-friendly children competition "I came up with Eco!"

    December 7 eco-friendly children competition "I came up with Eco!" was held in Environmental and Biological department of Youth Creativity Center " Voznesenskiy bridge". The game was organized by Sennoy Okrug Municipality with the participation of the NGO "Friends of the Baltic", which traditionally holds an educational station within the framework of this annual game.

    Experts from Friends of the Baltic NGO and Ecocentrum took part in the international camp "Baltics Starts Here!" and a field training on water monitoring in Baranovichi and Ivantsevichi districts of the Republic of Belarus.

    On September 19th a round table was held with the participation of experts of Friends of the Baltic in the Ecocentrum exhibition center. It was dedicated to educational projects, programs and activities in the 2017-2018 school year. The meeting was attended by teachers from St. Petersburg and Leningrad region who are interested in environmental education, energy conservation, implementing green solutions for the conservation of nature, climate and the Baltic sea. Among them there were not only experienced educators and our regular partners, but also those who want to know more about environmental issues.

    The round table "The Luga River - common value and common responsibility" is held on June 20th, 2017 in Luga town. Authorities, scientists, farmers, gardeners, NGOs, teachers, as well as active citizen participated in the meeting held in Luga Social and Business Center. They are united by their interest in preserving the clear waters and living nature of Luga River and its shores.

  • Peterhof Lukomorye: climate, rivers, the Baltic sea

    On the 16th of June people who want to relax on the beautiful shores of the clean rivers, to breathe clean air, enjoy the wildlife gathered together in Peterhof centralized library. The seminar "My favorite Lukomorye" was held to discuss the natural values of the region, climatic challenges and the participation of citizens in the development of the city.
