• The Results of the Environment Protection Year in Saint-Petersburg - things are going, problems remain

    Press conference “The Results of the Environment Protection Year of Saint-Petersburg Committee for Nature Use, Environmental Protection and Ecological Safety and plans on 2014” was held on January, 16. One of the main problems was the absence of sewage cleaning of 40% industrial enterprise and illegal dumps of waste products. People are worried about stopping separate waste collection in the city and absence of public awareness outreach for reducing the income of phosphates to the sewage.

  • Man on the Coast. How to combine people needs and the coastal nature conservation?

    International seminar "Man on the Coast" in the end of October in St. Petersburg was organized by "Friends of the Baltic" NGO with the support of Nordic Council of Ministers, and in cooperation with Ecologo-Biological center "Krestovskiy Island". The main theme of the seminar was experience exchange in nature education and sustainable solutions to preserve the unique coastal ecosystems - in the Nordic countries, the Baltic countries and Northwest Russia.

  • Training For School Ecosupporters: Steps For Greener Schools

    On October 24-25 St. Petersburg hosted the first training seminar for teachers «Ecosupporters in educational institutions» in the framework of Russian-Finnish project «Step to Ecosupport» within the ENPI South-East Finland- Russia Program. The training gathered about 50 participants - future ecosupporters, who will inform students and staff, support the practical implementation of the «green» solutions in all areas of school life.

  • Educational City Tour For Green Solutions In St.Petersburg

    In the middle of October in the center of St. Petersburg residents had an opportunity to make journey to the unique ecological route, where they were acquainted with energy efficient solutions for apartments, houses and offices, with examples of green solutions for urban courtyards, ways of saving resources and reducing waste, with the rules of selection goods and services, for not to hurt yourself and nature.

  • Start of the allrussian energy efficiency campaign in St. Petersburg

    On 21th of September the allrussian campaign «Energy efficiency - the largest, cleanest and cheapest source of energy in Russia» was launched in St. Petersburg within frameworks of the days of Europe. Friends of the Baltic - Russian SPARE-coordinator and Climate Secretariat of the Russian Socio-ecological Union presented the exhibition «Simple lessons of energy efficiency» that showed how each of us can save energy, resources, and the family budget.

  • Sea festival 2013 on the shore of the Gulf of Finland

    On the 24th of August in the town of Lomonosov, «Oranienbaum sea festival and environmental exhibition «Friends of the Baltic» was held the third time. The main objective was positioning Lomonosov (Oranienbaum) as a seaside city, increase awareness on protection of ecosystems of the Gulf of Finland, and encourage the development of yachting.

  • August, 17 the international bike campaign ”RACE FOR THE BALTIC” has finished in Copenhagen.

    The international bike campaign ”RACE FOR THE BALTIC” has finished in Dеnmark this Saturday. Cyclists have ridden more than 3500 km along the Baltic Sea coast in 9 countries. Friends of the Baltic & Green World NGOs has performed Russian part of the campaign along the Gulf of Finland shores June 29 – July 10th.

  • No Access to the Water!

    July, 6th Russian “Friends of the Baltic” team of Race for the Baltic moved from St.Petersburg to the West along the Southern shore of the Gulf of Finland. During this day we found out that to find the access to the shoreline can be a challenging quest even if you are living just near the coast.

  • Central Event of the Russian Part of the Campaign: Meeting at St.Petersburg Legislative Assembly and Round Table at Vodokanal.

    July 4th participants of the campaign cycled through St. Petersburg and had a meeting with the City Planning Commission deputy Irina Komolova and representatives of the Legislative Assembly Commission on ecology of St. Petersburg and Leningrad region. A round table "Ecological Approaches to the wastewater treatment for small communities and individual houses" was held at Vodokanal of St Petersburg.

  • Northern shore of the Gulf of Finland: eutrophication, local eco-groups and perspectives for protected areas on the coast.

    July 3rd Friends of the Baltic team cycled along the Northern coast of the Gulf of Finland in Kurortny district of St.Petersburg. We held an informational campaign and gathered residents’ signatures under the petition for the protection of the Baltic Sea in Zelenogorsk town park and on the beach in Solnechnoe village. A group of students, members of Sestroretsk cycling club “Sportstyle” (high school #324) and their teachers joined us that day.

  • Race for the Baltic campaign launches

    June, 8th the launch of the Race for the Baltic campaign, initiated by Coalition Clean Baltic, FISH-secretariat and Oceana, will take place in Malmö, Sweden to coincide with World Oceans Day.

  • River festival on Zhdanovka

    May 18, St. Petersburg, on the banks of the river Zhdanovka was held the 9th interregional youth River Festival, which Friends of the Baltic, together with partners, annually hold on various rivers. Students from 20 educational establishments of city and region shared their stories about the rivers they research. On ecologic stations, which were held by NGO’s and teachers, students got acquainted with the methods of analysis of the rivers and ways to improve their condition.

  • International project “Step to Eco Support” has been started in Saint Petersburg, eco advisors will appear in schools

    On 22 of May Kick off seminar was held in Petersburg in frame of russian-finish project called “Step to EcoSupport”. “Friends of the Baltic” organization during this project will create a network of school eco advisors, conduct trainings and counseling, prepare methodical recommendations for eco-friendly solutions in schools: energy and resource efficiency, about ecological priorities when buying equipment and materials for schools, waste management, transport solutions and other examples of “green” choice.

  • Southern coast of the Gulf of Finland: nature versus construction

    May 14th, Friends of the Baltic, together with the Centre of expertise «ECOM» with the support of Municipal Unit of Lomonosov town held a business bus excursion, devoted to the natural values of southern coast of the Gulf of Finland. The focus of the tour - the pieces of the coast, where there are prospects for the conservation of natural areas, but lack of decisions and regimes, which ensure their safety.

  • Round table discussion on how school environmental studies can help St. Petersburg become the «green city» of the Baltic region.

    Round table was organized by EBC «Krestovsky island», Friends of the Baltic and Expertise centre ECOM. During event more than 30 teachers together with experts discussed how the study of school children can help in the promotion of solutions for conservation and protection of natural areas and river valleys.

  • SPARE activists supported Earth Hour

    Friends of the Baltic SPARE participants in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia support world-wide Earth Hour, and also propose practical energy saving actions, which people can do every day.

  • “Friends of the Baltic” gave a start to the Youth EcoPatrol, which is dedicated to the Earth Day and Year of the Environment.

    On 15th of March “Friends of the Baltic” held training for Saint-Petersburg and Leningrad region teachers about the “EcoPatrol” and SPARE programs. EcoPatrol youth teams will analyze the illumination in schools, investigate people attitude to a separate waste collection and search for energy- and resource-efficient solutions.

  • Perspectives on the Development of Comfortable and Healthy Environment on the Gulf of Finland Coast Were Discussed at the Round Table in Lomonosov

    Round table ”Perspectives on sustainable development of Gulf of Finland region – view from the Southern coast” by Friends of the Baltic NGO was held on October 20th in Lomonosov. The round table attracted local NGOs and authorities, experts, architects and teachers from St.Petersburg and Leningrad region. The round table was held in the framework of Lomonosov environmental festival and “Meetings on Dvortsoviy” program with the support of Lomonosov municipality. An exhibition and publications about decreasing of phosphorous load to the Baltic Sea, created by "Friends of the Baltic" with the support of Coalition Clean Baltic was presented to the participants.

  • XII Youth Conference ”Ecomonitoring of the Small Rivers and Coast of the Gulf of Finland” and Exhibition “Let’s Reduce Phosphate Load to the Baltic Sea”

    October 20th, 2012 in the town of Lomonosov, the XIIth annual conference of the Friends of the Baltic River Watch network and the exhibition “Let’s Reduce Phosphate Load to the Baltic Sea” was held. The conference comprised results of youth ecomonitoring of small rivers of the Russian part of the Baltic Sea basin and of the Gulf of Finland coastline. Researches of the young ecologists showed that state-of-art in the river basins, coasts and lakes depends a lot on the culture of people living on their shores and on water use systems and on implementation of nature protection measures.
