• Russian-Finnish “Baltic Sea Embassadors” Youth Project launched in St.Petersburg

    October, 10th 2009: Friends of the Baltic together with Luonto-Liitto, our Finnish partner NGO, held the first pilot training for volunteers as part of the Baltic Sea Embassadors international project. These volunteers are supposed to give interactive Baltic Sea lessons in schools and centers for additional education.

  • Russian citizens give recommendations to politicians in the run-up to international climate negotiations

    On 26 September, the Climate Secretariat of the Russian Socio-Ecological Union and Friends of the Baltic NGO held the Day of Public Consultations on Climate Change in St.Petersburg, Russia. During the day, a hundred of people of different ages, occupations, social status and education level expressed their opinions on the issues of the climate change, the international climate negotiations, and voiced out their recommendations on these issues to politicians.

  • Round table on energy saving in housing sector

    December,18: Friends of the Baltic organized and held a moving round table discussion and excursions, devoted to positive experiences and possibilities of saving energy in housing sector.

  • Energy saving in housing communities is realistic and profitable

    November 13: Friends of the Baltic presented a set of useful material with advise on how to save energy in housing sector and on public participation in energy resources economizing to heads of housing communities of St.Petersburg.

  • Friends of the Baltic at the INFORSE-Europe seminar on NGO energy policy

    Friends of the Baltic presented SPARE and took part in the discussion on energy education so as NGO vision and involvement to the climate/energy policy October 13-15, 2008, at the INFORSE-Europe seminar in Montreuil, France.

  • Young Gulf of Finland coast’s inhabitants tell about the state of their environment

    October, the 11th: a traditional environmental youth conference was held in Lomonosov, it was organized by Friends of the Baltic NGO and the Center for children’s technical creativity.

  • Environmental Cycle through the Nature Values and "Hot Spots" on the South Shore of the Gulf of Finland and Izora Plateau.

    Youth bike action 2001

    Traditional youth bike action was organized by Children of the Baltic jointly with Green World. Participants - shcoolchildren from 10 years old, teachers and eco-activists from St.Petersburg, Lomonosov and Kipen covered more than 130 km from the Gulf of Finland coast along the Strelka river, through Kipen, Lopuhinka, Gostilitsy, basins of Kovash river and Karasta river, Map of Environmental CycleLomonosow and finished on the Gulf soast at the place before the Menshikovsky palace, where bitumen terminal is planed.

  • International CCB River Watch Camp - 2008

    July 30 - August 5, 2008 International CCB River Watch camp was organized in Belarus at the Vileiskoye lake, belonging to Western Dvina basin, by ARB-BirdLife-Belarus non-governmental environmental organization in cooperation with Friends of the Baltic NGO (Russia).
    This camp became a part of priority activity of international Coalition Clean Baltic, devoted to the promotion of the sustainable river basin management.

  • Presentation of local sustainable energy solutions made by Friends of the Baltic at UNFCCC meeting

    June 11, 2008 in Bonn the small scale sustainable energy solutions developed within SPARE were presented by Olga Senova, Friends of the Baltic at the WECF side event within UNFCCC (SB-28) international meeting .

  • Baltic Sea Campaign 2008 on the Gulf of Finland shore starts from River Festival

    On the 17th of May 2008 the traditional IV River Festival was held by Friends of the Baltic on at the bank of the Kikenka river, belonging to the Gulf of Finland basin! Festival participants were members of Friends of the Baltic/CCB River Watch network


    April 18, 2008 in St.Petersburg Centre for Environmental Safety the Youth Festival was held by Friends of the Baltic NGO, LATEAM group of St.Petersburg State University, Nature School Island and Russian Hydro Meteorology University.

  • Responsibility of business for nature conservation -- costs or benefits?

    Plenary session
    Environmental responsibility and the right environmental policy of business contribute to the favorable environment in St. Petersburg, keeping the population healthy, increase of quality of goods and services, and benefit both companies and citizens. This is the common conclusion that the participants of the conference "Environmental responcibility of business as a basis for favorable environment and investment attraction of St. Petersburg and Leningrad region" came to. The conference was held in St. Petersburg, on September 20 and 21, 2007.

  • River festival 2007 in pavlovsk - youth tells about the local small rivers

    On May, 12 2007 young researchers and river protectors gathered in Pavlovsk at the river Popovka for the River Festival. This annual event is the part of the Friends of the Baltic long-term programme for public watch and protection of the rivers of the Gulf of Finland basin. For the third year the River Festival is held in Spring on various rivers. In 2005 it was held in Strel'na nearby the Strelka river, in 2006 - in Pesochnoye township by the river Chyornaya.

  • "Friends of the Baltic" international youth environmental camp - education for personal actions for sustainable development

    In the middle of July the international youth environmental camp, which worked during more than two weeks in Russia and Estonia, was finished. The camp was held by Friends of the Baltic NGO with the support of Nordic Council of Minister.

  • International youth environmental parliament in St.Petersburg

    "International Baltic Code of environmentally friendly behavior" was adopted by participants of International Youth Environmental Parliament (YEP), which was held on 22 April 2006 in Znamenka on the South coast of Gulf of Finland within Nordplus Neighbors Program of Nordic Council of Ministers. In Parliament took part more than 60 schoolchildren, students, teachers and activists of NGOs from Russia, Finland, Sweden and Estonia.

  • Presentation of the book "Renewable Energy for North-west Russia. Resources and perspectivities"

    This brochure is addressed to representatives of local authorities, non-governmental organizations (NGO), teachers, students, and ordinary citizens, interested in energy issues. It will be useful both for those, who would like to know more about environmentally friendly energy production, and for those, who is looking for practical possibilities and solutions for energy supply in a house, district or town on the basis of renewable energy sources.

  • Environmental education for sustainable development - education for real life

    Participants of the international seminar "Environmental Education for Sustainable Development. Interactive Methods and Educational Programs" discussed educational methods, which help people to make their everyday life more environmentally friendly. This seminar was held by Friends of the Baltic NGO January 21-22 in Znamenka (Peterhof) with the support of Nordic Council of Minister within the program "Nordplus Neighbour".

  • How to make rivers clean? North-West russian NGOs look for solutions

    Inter-regional seminar "Methods of ecological investigations and improvement of environmental situation in the river basins. Role of NGOs" was hold by Friends of the Baltic NGO with the support of Coalition Clean Baltic" January 13-14 , 2006 in Lomonosov-Petrodvorets.

    This seminar united representatives of local groups and NGOs of St.Petersburgh, Leningrad region, Novgorod and Vologda regions and Karelia, which work for river watch and nature protection in the river basins/ Also scientists and representatives of local authorities took part in the seminar.

  • The Conference on the Local Sustainable Initiatives and Public Participation in the Gulf of Finland Region” in St.Petersburg

    The Russian-Estonian conference “Local Sustainable Initiatives and Public Participation in the Gulf of Finland Region” took place in St.Petersburg on September 30 and October 1 and presented experiences of North-West Russia and Estonia on the local solutions in the field od waste management, nature protection, energy saving, etc. The conference was held by Friends of the Baltic NGO in cooperation with Estonian Society for Nature Conservation, St.Petersburg Centre for Environmental Initiatives and Russian Geographic Society with the support of the US Embassy in Moscow

  • North-west russian NGOs are uniting for protection of small rivers and local nature values

    How can we improve environmental situation in small river basins of North-West Russia and save nature and cultural values? What NGOs and public can do for that?

    These questions where discussed by participants of Inter-regional seminar "Development of public participation in the river basins management and prjtection of local habitatl values in the Baltic Sea region".

    The seminar was held in Lomonosov on 8-9 January by Friends of the Baltic NGO within the CCB "RIVER WATCH" program and regional program "OUR HABITAT VALUES".
