100th Anniversary of the Commission for Nature Protection of the Russian Geographical Society

March 22, 2012 a scientific conference was held in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the Commission for Nature Protection of the Russian Geographical Society. "Friends of the Baltic" were co-organizers of the conference and presented an exhibition "Living Baltica" created with the support from the international Coalition Clean Baltic.

The conference brought together about 100 scientists of different fields – geographers, historians, biologists, ecologists, as well as NGO representatives and the government of St. Petersburg and Leningrad region.

The following main topics were discussed:

  • Development of the specially protected natural areas of St. Petersburg and Leningrad region
  • Climate change and its impact on the ecosystem of the region
  • Development of "green business" - possibilities for the introduction and implementation of sustainable strategies and solutions in the business sector
  • Participation of public and NGOs in the protection of natural areas and ecosystems


"Friends of the Baltic" chairperson, Olga Senova, made a presentation on climate change and sustainable energy solutions, as well as public participation in the environmental initiatives.

Elena Kireeva presented recent research in ecology and local history carried out by pupils and teachers of St. Petersburg and Leningrad region. These research articles will be included in the collected volume of publications in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Commission for Nature Protection of the RGS.
