The river basin: water, climate and human impact. Training on methods of investigation of water objects.

Leaders of school ecological groups, schoolchildren, as well as students, active citizens, interested in River watch, were participants of the RW training. 30 participants from St. Petersburg and Leningrad region, including Luga River basin, visited the training. Experts of the Neva-Ladoga Basin Water Directorate, Institute of Limnology of the Russian Academy of Science, representatives of the library association of Kurortny district of St.Petersburg, public organizations «Separate waste in Gatchina» and «Kolibri v KADRe» took part in the event.

Olga Senova, the chair of Friends of the Baltic NGO, presented the methodological materials of River watch and talked about the experience of River Watch Network in St.Petersburg and Leningrad region.
Anna Kazina, project coordinator of Friends of the Baltic, paid attention on nutrients load in water bodies and presented the map of nutrients loading for waters of St.Petersburg and Leningrad region. The map has created by ecological activists, volunteers, interested citizens and organizations. Information about nitrates concentrations in rivers, lakes, wells, springs, as well as potential sources of pollutionб and informed about points of River Watch activities.

Nadezhda Bystrova, expert of Friends of the Baltic, presented instruments for measuring the concentration of ammonium in water, pH, total hardness, nitrate concentration. Methods of research are designed for different participants. All participants of River watch network using express tests do research on the concentration of nitrates in wells, springs and rivers. The climate project coordinator Ekaterina Uspenskaya talked about the problem of flooding of territories, which is becoming more urgent due to climate change. Floodings can aggravate the pollution of water bodies by nutrients as a result of flushing from fields, vegetable gardens, rural toilets. “Ecocentкгь” and “Friends of the Baltic” collect information about flooding risks from various sources: interviewing of local residents, requests to authorities and scientific organizations. River watch members can contribute to the inventarization of flooding areas. Participants have received informational materials and questionnaires about flooding in river basins.

  • Questionnaire about climate change and flooding

Expert Darya Mytareva talked about the problem of microplastics in water bodies, presented the methodology for public research. "Ecocentrum" and "Friends of the Baltic" in cooperation with the Institute of Limnology under the Russian Academy of Sciences, Russian state hydrological institute and St. Petersburg State University are among the first organizations dealing with this topic in Russia (together with the Institute of Oceanology in Kaliningrad, the Far Eastern Federal University).

The results of all public investigations will be marked on the map.
