Experts of ANEO "Friends of the Baltic" and Ecocentrum presented the NGO's view on reducing the nutrient load on water objects of Leningrad Region at the international exhibition Agrorus.

Specialists of ANEO "Friends of the Baltic" and Ecocentrum initiated discussion of reducing the nutrient load on water bodies from agriculture and toilet waste at the Agrorus exhibitionon on August 22, 2018.

Elena Grechina make presentation about simple methods for reducing the flow of sewage to the environment in the framework of the conference "Harmonious Development of Rural Territories".

One person produces 550 kg of liquid waste per year - it means 4 kg of nitrogen and 0.37 kg of phosphorus, and 60 kg of solid waste is 0.55 kg of nitrogen and 0.18 kg of phosphorus. If there are no high-quality cleaning of toilet drains, these substances enter ground and surface waters, promoting nutrients pollution of water bodies, waterways, underground drinking sources. Residents of small rural settlements often do not have the opportunity to connect to centralized sewerage and are forced to solve the problem of disposing of toilet waste and other domestic sewage by themselves. The cesspool still remains the common way of collecting toilet waste.

A good alternative to a cesspool is the use of compostable dry toilets in the countryside. Toilets contain of waste, that are processed into compost, and then used as a fertilizer. This toilet does not drain into the environment; it does not pollute drinking sources and natural water bodies, no smell. In the Leningrad Region, there are currently four demonstration areas with such toilets: Volosovsky district, Kaikino village, Art-project "Kaikino-10"; Lomonosovsky district, Fauna Gathering community; Gatchinsky district, Chernovo village, "Golden Horseshoe" ranch and Stavotino village, Luga district. Anyone can get acquainted with the work of such a toilet for free.

Anna Kazina took part in the Roundtable "Best Available Technologies of Agricultural Production" and spoke about the experience of NGOs in the field of manure management.

As is known, agriculture (and in particular animal farming) makes a significant contribution to the pollution of water bodies. How to use livestock waste for the benefit of agriculture and avoid pollution of rivers and seas?

A media tour was organized for journalists and authorities to study the experience of farmers in the Leningrad Region (http://www.baltfriends.ru/node/2128) on June 30, 2017, and, an experience exchange tour took place between farmers in Russia, Estonia and Finland (http://ecocentrum.ru/ru-ru/node/335) 12 On April 16, 2018. Both evens were organized in the framework of the Barents-Baltic program "Nature and People".

The participants of the trip were able to get acquainted with different environmental aspects of sustainable agriculture, tasks and solutions to reduce the environmental impact to the Baltic Sea, examples of the development of organic agriculture, and biogas production from livestock waste.

The main methods of manure utilization: to disseminate manure directly among citizens; storage for 8-12 months and entering on own fields as required; processing into biogas. The balance of nitrogen and phosphorus (the difference between the amount of these elements introduced in the form of fertilizer and the extracted plants) differs in all countries from region to region. In this case, there are regions with a positive balance and with a negative balance. Nowadays, technologies for removing liquid and air from manure are being actively developed - this will help make the fertilizer convenient for transportation from overflow zones to zones with a deficit.

In all three countries - Russia, Estonia and Finland - an environmental project WWF (World Wildlife Fund) is implemented, which allows Baltic region farmers to compete for the BalticSeaFarmerAward prize (up to 10 000 euros) - the award for contribution to the reduction of pollution in the Baltic sea. In 2018, Russia also takes part in the contest (more info - bfn.org.ru). This amount serves as a pleasant encouragement for environmental activities and contribution to reducing the pollution of the Baltic Sea!
