School Project for Application of Resources and Energy engages new participants

Friends of the Baltic continues activities within the Days of energy saving in St. Petersburg, which is in case from September 15 to the end of October as a part of the all-Russian festival of energy saving #VMESTEYARCHE2018.

Within the festival events we introduce the all-Russian School Project for Application of Resources and Energy (SPARE). We communicate with citizens on simple methods of energy saving and tell them how a personal contribution affects the climate.

On September 15 Friends of the Baltic organized an interactive space at the opening of #VMESTEYARCHE2018 festival. We held a Cooperation for nature and climate training for teachers and activists on 19th of September. On September 25, Friends of the Baltic had an open day in Ecocentrum exhibition space. Also on 28th of September we organized a seminar for teachers on how to make a climate plan for schools.

On the open day we invited teachers from scools and kindergartens, teachers of supplementary education to visit Ecocentrum. We also organized an excursion for the group of schoolchildren. Several programs were on the agenda to choose from. Teachers got acquainted with the detailed presentation about the nominations of the "Energy and environment" contest. They participated in master class on how to make projects on climate, energy efficiency and energy saving. We received a positive feedback from all teachers who were inspired by new project ideas. This year, the increasing interest in the competition also attracts teachers of preschool educational institutions actively participating in the Eco-schools/Green flag program.

Teachers and students played a board game named "The life cycle of things". It's a game teaches how to save energy and climate through the resource saving. Following the rules of the game, participants considered the life cycle of their favorite product. For example, they followed a path a chocolate egg (or any other product) goes through from the moment of extraction of raw materials to make all components of the product (for the egg it is actually chocolate, packaging, plastic egg, paper instructions and toys), transportation, storage and usage to waste disposal. At all stages of the product life cycle, it is proposed to consider the impact on the environment, energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions, which is the general impact on the climate. Thinking in detail about the life cycle of the product makes everyone of us reflect on how much this product is actually needed, whether it can not be used at all or replaced with something more environmentally friendly.
Especially for a team of students we organized an interactive tour titled "Energy Saving-it's easy". Children learned about the connection between climate and energy, explored the "Energy suitcase" filled with devices for saving energy in everyday life, made some experiments. The participants were actively involved in the tour activities, answered questions and showed high awareness on many environmental issues.

On September 28, there was a workshop for teachers on how to make a climate plan of the school. During the training we discussed how to plan and implement actions to protect the climate by small actions made in schools and why it is important. Teachers learned how climate plan helps schools to become more environmentally friendly and how the school energy audit allows to spend the school budget more economically. We described several stages of climate plan development and proposed teachers to perform the first stage conducting an energy audit on the example of the Ecocentrum room. On the basis of the energy audit instruction they found" hot spots" and proposed ideas for their elimination.

The climate plan of the school is a new nomination of "Energy and habitat" contest. The very first projects on the creation of climate plans were tested last year in some schools in Russia. This year's nomination is of increasing interest to teachers. We paid special attention to the climate planning at the workshop on the 1st and 2nd of October.
