Eco-advisers network has developed in Luga river basin. Eco-advisers - consultants, promoting solutions for nature conservation, rational use of energy and resources, adaptation to climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in schools, education centers, in villages, towns and districts.

25 teachers and environmental activists were participants of the training on January 24th, 2018 and received a certificate of eco-advisers. The meeting was held in Luga town.

Experts from Friends of the Baltic NGO and environmental organization Ecocentrum told participants about environmentally friendly solutions that help to educational institutions to reduce the negative impact on the environment. They discussed about saving of resources and energy, waste management, environmentally friendly choice of materials and equipment in procurement, as well as transport solutions for schools.

Teachers from Luga and Kingisepp districts of Leningrad Region, as well as Ivangorod, learned methods of eco-adviser’s work. The movement of eco-consultants was created in St. Petersburg some years ago – now there are already more than 40 eco-advisers in the city, 125 people in 7 regions of Russia, there are also some eco-advisers in Finland and Estonia.

Info-points about the nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) impact to water bodies, about waste management (mainly – plastic and microplastic), energy saving in schools, as well as climate change and flooding were important parts of the training.

Future eco-consultants learned about the school climate adaptation plans, what the schools can do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions due to the energy efficiency measures, and how to participate in the

The participants presented their view on the first three steps they plan to make in the role of eco-advisers: primary eco-audit of the school, the development of School Ecological Council, discussion with school administration of the most relevant environmental decisions.

Participants received express tests to find nitrates in water bodies and a questionnaire on flooding. These investigation methods will be conducted in the field season of 2018. The results will be collected in different regions of St. Petersburg and Leningrad region and put on the map: map of nitrates in water bodies is developing, including present and potential flooding zones. Anyone can take part in the map developing - it is enough to apply on interest.
