Clean Beach is the annual international environmental event. This year besides the educational quest and cleaning up there was marine litter monitoring. Waste audit includes the analysis and categorizing of garbage. It helps to identify the sources of marine litter.Monitoring was held by Elizaveta Merinova, the Friends of the Baltic expert on marine litter and microplastics, and Ludmila Filatova, the HELCOM expert on marine litter from Russian Fedration.
Thanks to the joint efforts of the participants 40 cubic meters of garbage were collected. The analysis of coastal litter showed dominance of tourists garbage - plastic bags, cups and bottle lids, food packaging. But also we have found a lot of polistyren pieces, cotton buds and sanitary pads.
Thеse results prooves that we need to reduce single-use plastics. European Union have already passed the legislative
regulation. Ban on production and realization of some single-use plastic will come into the force from 2021 year. It is also necessary for Russia to take measures, until we reduce plastic pollution the Baltic sea will not become cleaner.
As a result the international campaign "Clean Beach" and the monitoring held by the "Friends of the Baltic" expert is a contribution to the implementation of the Regional action plan of the Commission for the protection of the marine environment of the Baltic sea (HELCOM) on marine litter.
The organizer of the action was the Committee for nature use, environmental protection and ecological safety of St. Petersburg Government, and the "Clean Beach" operator - the Specialized state company Mineral state company.
