On the 4 of June, 2018 in the city of Luga, the representatives of the Public Consultative Council of the Luga Basin, heads of local settlements, educational and public organizations, as well as representatives of the media and fishing clubs took part at the Round Table "Quality of Natural Waters in the Luga River Basin: Public Participation in the Identification and solving water problems ". Within were discussed the framework of the event, the main environmental problems in the river basin, and were conducted field trips to study water quality in the water bodies of the Luga region. The organizers of the event were the «Ecocentrum» and «Friends of the Baltic» in the framework of the Barents-Baltic program "Nature and Man".
The seminar "Marine litter is our problem" brought together experts from different areas interested in solving the problems of marine litter and microplastics pollution of water bodies in the Baltic region. What is marine litter and what it consist of? What is microplastics and how much does it get into the Baltic sea every year? What measures are being taken to reduce marine debris at the Federal and international level? How does the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle system work with the government, business and society? These and some other issues were discussed by experts and participants at the seminar "Marine litter is our problem. The search for solutions to minimize plastic pollution of water bodies"
On May 12, the "Sea-Climate-Energy" and "Microplastic" information stations launched "Friends of the Baltic" as part of the fifth international environmental campaign "Clean Coast". The action took place on the Tarhovka beach in the Kurortny district of the city on the northern shore of the Gulf of Finland. It was devoted to improving the ecological state of the coast of the Gulf of Finland, the formation of ecological awareness of the younger generation and the active population of the city, as well as the development of environmental volunteer movement in the field of environmental protection.
The round-table "Planning and implementation of measures for environmental education of the population of St. Petersburg" was organized by the Committee for nature use, environmental conservation and ecological safety of St. Petersburg City Government in the center of import substitution and localization of St. Petersburg. The round-table was attended by representatives of public environmental organizations and projects: Friends of the Baltic, ECA, Clean games, Environmental Union and public organizations, which promote separate collection and ecofriendly lifestyle etc., as well as representatives of the business community.
The Luga River Festival gathered together more than 100 people. It was held on May 19 in the village Tolmachevo in Luga district of Leningrad region. Students and teachers, environmentalists, scientists in different disciplines, organizations, authorities, media and NGOs were the guests of the Festival.
The training on selection and analysis of microplastic samples taken from natural waters took place in the St. Petersburg on the 7 of May. It was held by the experts of Ecocentrum Ltd, non-governmental organization "Friends of the Baltic" and the Research Limnology Institute of Lymnology of Russian Academy of Science. Educators from schools and universities, public activists and scientists shared their experience of water research and the results of testing methods of marine litter and microplastics investigations.
