On September 23 in St. Petersburg's "Friends of the Baltic" and "Ecocentrum" hosted a round table on cooperation between educational, scientific and public organizations for the protection of nature. The proposals of Friends of the Baltic on the development of environmental solutions and development of accessible environment on protected areas were discussed at a joint meeting of the Environmental Council under the Government of St. Petersburg and Public Environmental Council under the Governor of Leningrad Region.

Press conference “Rivers, springs and wells: about problems and solutions for reducing pollution of natural waters by wastewater from cities, villages, gardening communities and agriculture” was held On June 13, in INTERFAX Inform agency. Friends of the Baltic and Ecocentrum presented the results of a three-year work on the Barents-Baltic Nature and People program and the project “Small-scale solutions to reduce nutrient load into the Baltic Sea” in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region.

Seminar "Quality of natural waters in St. Petersburg and Leningrad region: how to prevent nutrient pollution to the Baltic Sea" will be held on May, 23rd in St.Petersburg. Aim: to evaluate the nutrient pollution of natural waters in St. Petersburg and Leningrad regions and its sources, to present the case studies and successful practices from Baltic Sea region countries, consider methods and role of various stakeholders for solving the problem.

Farmers of Luga region worries about utilization of animal waste

The presentation of the brochure “How to use dung without losses for the farmer and the environment” was held on March 28 in Luga during the meeting of small farm heads of Luga district. Friends of the Baltic were invited to tell farmers about the problems of rivers pollution because of agricultural loads and good solutions for animal waste management.

Environmental issues of Luga region

In the autumn of 2018, the locals of Luga region found a breach in wastewater treatment plant: waste waters flowed out towards the Luga River. In several months we decided to check that out. On 25 December, Friends of the Baltic met the locals and discussed the topical issues. Activists of Public Advisory Council of the River Luga visited sewages and found the breach; however, waste waters did not leak out. It seemed like the treatment plant was out of steam.

Shcheglovo, Kuznechnoye, Novoe Devyatkino. More than 136 settlements of Leningrad Region do not have decent wastewater treatment

Friends of the Baltic conducted a public survey to find out how residents evaluate the work of sewage treatment plants in their region. Zhivoy Ruchey, Kuznechnoye, Shcheglovo, Yukki, Toksovo, Novoe Devyatkino, Kuzemkino villages, as well as Lomonosov and Kingisepp towns have similar challenges: bad wastewater treatment. According to our results, 5 settlements do not have sewage treatment plants at all and 4 of them have broken ones. Wastewater facilities worked inefficiently in the majority of communities of Leningrad region.

Our friends and partners gathered on New Year’s Eve to discuss important environmental issues and outputs of last year’s projects: more than 20 public river watchers joined us, thus 27 new marks appeared on the map. Clicking on them, one will learn the river nitrate and microplastics content.

Development of cooperation between government, business, science, population and NGOs on the municipal and agricultural wastewater treatment

The seminar "Development of cooperation between government, business, science, population and NGOs on municipal and agricultural wastewater treatment" brought together more than 40 participants interested in finding solutions to reduce the burden of wastewater on the environment. The focus was on the issues of wastewater treatment in cities, towns, individual houses in non-sanitized areas, as well as the effluents of large livestock complexes and small farms. Among the participants there were regional authorities, municipalities, environmentally-oriented business, scientists, wastewater treatment specialists, representatives of large and small farms, NGOs, gardeners and residents of the Leningrad region and St. Petersburg.
